Welcome to the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program!

This program aims to promote long-term reconstruction of Iraq by developing the leadership skills of Iraqi Youth and engaging them in civics training focused on conflict resolution and rooted in the principles of democracy, the exchange program will bring 50 students and 6 educators from various regions and ethnic communities in Iraq to the US to increase American youths’ understanding and appreciation for Iraqi Culture, to foster cross-cultural exchange between Iraqi and American students and to provide students with the concrete skills of leadership and conflict resolution. 50 American students And 25 American homestay families from diverse socio-economic backgrounds will participate in the exchange program over one summer (2008).

Selection

Students will be rigorously selected based on academic achievement, English language skills, leadership ability and commitment to public service and dedication to building a stable Iraqi nation and to the extent permitted by security constraints, Iraqi students will be recruited and selected from all regions of Iraq with respect to cultural, religious, socio-economic and gender diversity , the program chaperones selection will be from the schools and/or community-based organizations identified during the recruitment process. Chaperones will be English-speaking educators that have prior relationships with the selected youth.

Applicants to the IYLEP program must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate flexibility and commitment to promoting cross cultural understanding.
  • Age must be from 15-17.
  • Meet minimum English proficiency requirement (a grade point average of at least 80% or "very good" in English classes.
  • Are nationals of Iraq and currently living in Iraq.
  • Are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, and were not born in the United States.
  • Have not previously participated in a U.S.-government sponsored exchange program.

As an IYLEP student, you will have a unique opportunity to:

IYLEP scholarships cover all major expenses, including airfare, room and board, health insurance, pocket money, and educational supplies.
